In 1949 Kitch and Alice Cox set up twenty week club for people to save for scarce items such as china and household goods. The club soon expanded and with it the customer demands grew to encompass furniture, carpets, curtains, blinds and decorating goods. As the demands grew so K & A Cox was born, starting in their front room it soon expanded to other rooms and covered the garden eventually more space was needed and the house next door was bought. The business continued to grew and staff where employed.
Kitch and Alices daughter Beryl left college to help her parents in the business. When Beryl married, Kitch asked her if Ginger could join the company. Kitchs other son-in –law was also in the business at this time.
In 1979 Kitch decided to retire and split the business in two. Beryl and Ginger took on the Ray Street premises and expanded the soft furnishings and wallpaper side of the business.
In 1993 Robert, Beryl’s son (Kitch and Alice’s Grandson) joined the business after studying business studies at Trent Polytechnic followed by four years as a buyer at Rolls Royce. Initially his focus was on the blind and awnings side of the business bringing in house the manufacture of vertical and roller blinds. As time progressed Beryl handed over more of the overall management of the business to Robert so that a well planned retirement could be achieved.
Meanwhile in 1988, Darren Shelbourn set up his own company supplying and fitting windows, doors, bespoke conservatories and manufacturing double glazed units.
As Darren and Robert where close friends from school and college (where they studied business) as there businesses grew they spotted areas where each complimented the other and in 1998 decided to merge K & A Cox with Glazedale.
The business continued to grow and in 2005 it became apparent that it was outgrowing its Ray Street premises. In 2006 the opportunity arose to purchase a run down former petrol filling station in Langley Mill, after considerable hard work the centre St Andrews Court was developed and K & A Cox/Glazedale now runs from this location.
St Andrews Court also houses other independent businesses including Lounging Around – three piece suites, Dayclear Lighting – lighting showroom and Kitchen Solutions – Kitchen Showroom.
K & A Cox Ltd / Glazedale continues to be a family run business and although it has grown in size prides itself for good service and customer satisfaction gaining the majority of its business from personal recommendation
